The wolves, of course, obliged, with no care for the risk the herder was putting his livelihood in.


It took a sudden financial crisis for the herder to "wake up" and realize the impracticality of what he was doing, and by then, he had to come to terms with the loss of ranch-capital to see himself and his farm through.

Before revealing the exact form these five "wolves" of self-sabotage take, I want to assure you that the question I just asked is coming from a place of empathy and understanding.


Why? Because I've experienced that capital-drain on my own journey. And let me tell you, some of those forms are so insidious, it takes some deep introspection and observation to identify them!

But what makes them truly harmful is they can easily be taken for granted as amorphous concepts tied with "character flaws" when the reality is this: Keeping yourself tied down by them has some very physical (and emotional) consequences. Consequences like:
  • Approaching your daily task-list with a sense of dread and intimidation, and envy of others who manage to get "SO much done in so little time"...
  • Leading your business, your mission and your passion from a place of regret and resentment instead of joy and genuine service...
  • Resigning that your "ideal lifestyle" is to remain in the realm of fantasy, never fully trusting yourself to have what it takes to "make it"...
  • Feeling drained (instead of energized) by your business, never having enough energy to go "All In" in work and play...
  • Feeling the guilt get out of control and encompass every commitment; guilt over not making the time to spend with loved ones, or... over not being there for your business when you do spent it with your loved ones...

What I’ve seen to be a recurring pattern with “goal setting” over the years is that people approach task-lists with a great deal of enthusiasm and with all the best intentions.

From there, they tend to divide into two groups. The far larger group typically ends up having a much harder time staying on course, while the smaller group follows through. I’ve been observing this closely, and have identified the one distinguishing advantage the smaller group has: Sustained, long-term clarity.

And how do they pull it off? By keeping the tasks that are absolutely necessary, and postponing (or even removing entirely) those that can wait. Less is more!
